Staying in Motion Starts by Taking a Hike
In middle school, most of us learned Newton’s Laws of Motion: An object at rest stays at rest. An object in motion stays in motion.
That rule applies to our bodies, too.
Sit too long, and it’s hard to get moving.
Start walking, and it’s easier to keep going.
Walk consistently, and you’re far more likely to stay active as you age.
In his segment, Dr. Nat Mann reminds us that while neighborhood sidewalks and the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail are wonderful, sometimes the best way to stay in motion is to go off-road. Uneven terrain challenges our balance, strength, and endurance—helping us remain active, mobile, and independent longer. That’s where Your Trust comes in.
The Greenville County Historic & Natural Resources Trust, working with dedicated partners, has been in motion for nearly five years—protecting some of the county’s most beautiful and health-giving places. Many of these lands are perfect places to do exactly what Dr. Mann recommends: take a hike.
Here are just a few places Your Trust has helped protect—for you:
Seven additions to our state parks: Paris Mountain, Jones Gap, and Caesars Head
An anchor purchase for a new state park on Highway 11
Two additions to Natural Heritage Sites
Two additions to our county parks: Southside and the new Oakland Plantation
Plus, multiple properties protecting rivers and critical habitats
Every one of these places is or will be open to the public—not only to protect nature (as vital as that is), but to support physical health, mental well-being, and quality of life for Greenville County residents.
So, take Dr. Mann’s advice. Get a dose of “Vitamin N”—the healing power of nature.
Enjoy Greenville County’s extraordinary landscapes while keeping your body in motion and honoring those New Year’s health goals by taking a hike.
