Why Parks Make Us Happier
The World’s Happiest People – Part 2
The newest World Happiness Report highlights a troubling trend. Young people in North America and Western Europe are significantly less happy than they were 15 years ago.
Researchers point to many causes. But heavy social media use appears to be one important factor. Teenagers spending more than seven hours a day on social media consistently report much lower life satisfaction than those who spend less than an hour.
But the report offers another clue. The happiest countries don't simply use less technology. They spend more time connecting with people—and with nature.
A walk through Paris Mountain State Park. A bike ride on the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail. An afternoon in Falls Park simply sitting on a bench. These aren't luxuries. They're investments in healthier minds.
That's why local parks matter.
Every new trail... Every conserved stream... Every neighborhood park... creates another opportunity to trade scrolling for strolling. The Greenville County Historic & Natural Resources Trust believes healthier communities begin with healthy places.
Sometimes the best mental health app has no screen at all. Research continues to show that one of the simplest ways to improve your mental wellbeing may be as close as your nearest park or trail.
