Greenville County, SC — On Episode 74 released on March, 21, 2023, Katy Smith of Simple Civics: Greenville County podcast interviewed GCHNRT Board Member, Alex Reynolds. Alex shared about the formation of the Trust and his journey to joining the Board during the Trusts’ inception.

“[The creation of the Trust] was actually one of the final acts that County Council did in 2020. Later in 2021, they funded it…Creating a county entity, as it turns out, is both harder and easier than I thought it would be. Much like anything else that happens in Greenville County an ordinance is passed. That ordinance that established the trust is kind of like our constitution…it lays out what we do. It actually lays out all the criteria that we judge projects that are submitted to us.”

Alex shared about some recent projects the Trust has funded, including the Paris Mountain Expansion, which made news headlines as well as “smaller” projects, like the historic YWCA building and their importance to Greenville County. Katy also asked Alex about the return on County’s investment, to which he stated,

“So right now for every county dollar that has gone into a project, it has currently attracted $7.20 from outside of Greenville County. So our money is multiplied and that’s really where this becomes a good investment on the County’s end, right? Because what are we doing? We’re preserving that quality of life. That quality of life is bringing people into the County, that is hopefully increasing the tax base in ways that are good growth.”
