How Paris Mountain grew 20%

The impossible takes a little longer.

Protecting Greenville County's most beautiful places isn't as simple as drawing lines on a map.

Conservation only happens when willing landowners decide the time is right. And life can change overnight. A family paying college tuition, facing medical bills, or settling an estate may suddenly need to sell land they once planned to “keep forever.”

That's why conservation organizations must always be ready.

For more than 50 years, Naturaland Trust has quietly stepped in when those once-in-a-lifetime opportunities appear. Since 2021, the Greenville County Historic & Natural Resources Trust has had the honor of partnering with Naturaland Trust on a range of projects across the County.   Protecting some of nature’s most fragile places … or making more lands available for the public.

Five such projects have added a total of 320 acres to Paris Mountain State Park: expanding the park by 20% despite unprecedented growth and development.

The projects ranged from just less than 8 to 150 acres, proving that every opportunity matters.

Not every piece of land should become public green space. But when property beside an existing park — or land with rare plants or wildlife communities — becomes available, waiting often means losing it forever.

The lesson? Conservation isn't about buying every acre. It's about being prepared to act when the right acre becomes available.

That's how the impossible becomes possible.
